Corfu Waste Management: 7-10 thousand tons of refuse may be sent to Ioannina? Denied by Mayor of Corfu

Pass the parcel...

Possibility that 7-10 thousand tons of refuse may be sent to Ioannina, Enimerosi

"The trial to be carried out at the new integrated waste management facility in Ioannina seems to present an excellent opportunity. According to well-informed sources, this is planned for November and they want to test the new facility in conditions of complete saturation. It is said that the consultant, who is the one who did the updated study for Corfu, is open to the idea of using the rubbish from Corfu to create conditions of complete saturation at the Ioannina facility. If this goes ahead, it will open the way for Corfu to send 7 - 10 thousand tons of refuse initially. The legal procedure for the sea transport is already in place"

14th October Update: This story has now been denied by the Mayor of Corfu:

Waste solutions in Epirus, Corfu (eKathimerini, May 2013)

"Rubbish dumps should become a thing of the past from 2016 in Ioannina and on Corfu after the government on Wednesday gave the green light for waste processing plants to be built in those two areas through public-private partnerships (PPPs), with the tenders expected to be launched next month. The budget for the new contracts comes to 210 million euros, bringing the total value of PPPs for waste management to 2.1 billion euros".
