A poem by Efterpi Sarrou
Return
The Collapse of the Greek-Italian Front After the Intervention of Germany
So we returned,
Our hearts filled with bitterness,
Without honours or the beating of drums,
Having failed to achieve our objectives.
But when our hands
Clumsily grasped the spade or mattock
We couldn't find the strength
To dig the dry soil.
Someday that soil
Will be revitalised,
Moistened and made damp
With the innocent blood of its children
Who'll die fighting to reclaim it.
Then, only then,
Will come the True Return.
