Colin Wilson chose this amusing/disturbing Bernard Shaw quotation as an opener for his book The Outsider (1956):

John Bull's Other Island, by Bernard Shaw (pdf).

As Michael Holroyd comments, Broadbent is the "stage Englishman" created for Irish audiences.
