Very cold in Castle Cary today. No snow.
Where have all the swans gone?
Roger Otton published part of the story
(Castle Cary Past and Present Exhibition Souvenir Magazine):
I seem to remember being told that one of the swans had been shot at by a local youth.
The swans themselves could be a bit territorial and aggressive.
Some of the soul went out of Castle Cary, for me at least,
when the swans disappeared from the Horse Pond, and after my father died in 1973.
The Church, the Horse Pond and War Memorial certainly look different. I remember them like this:
The Horse Pond, 1955
Another Francis Frith photo
But it's good to be back, with my brother -
