I learned more this evening, from Dr. Spiros Giourgas, the initiator of this ambitious project to celebrate the bicentenary by bringing an exhibition of about 50 or more of Lear's Corfu paintings, sketches and watercolours of Corfiot landscapes to Corfu in May-June 2012, to be shown at the former palace. Here are some book-covers. I hope they will all be reprinted for the occasion.

ReplyDeletei bumped into dr giorgas last wk (12 aug?) and he said things were going great guns ref Lear and he'd had a v intense meeting. i kicked myself for not keeping in closer touch. when Dr G first mentioned the Lear celebratio a year or so back, i was in close touch with various old pals in the UK book trade as well as the the trade mag The The Bookseller who asked for finer details nearer the time for any Lear publishers who might want to participate, bring exhibits n any mss lying around [clarendon press?], take advert space in programmes, senior execs arrange expense account trip to ensure sponsorship money being well directed and tans were looking good. i even offered one well connected pal use of the guest wing. Giorgas gave impression that these were the sort of links he was thinking of, but i didnt keep tabs. now i hear it from him and read it from you so i reckon it's underway and too late to slot in the book people i'd originally got all excited over the corfu knees-up.

ReplyDeleteMy posting was written exactly a year ago, in August 2011, and I haven't been able to keep up to date with news of the detailed plans. It's certainly going to be a very important event, and all sorts of opportunities for seminars, links, concerts and other cultural events could still be built around the exhibition. I don't know if the Durrell School has any plans?
