More Cruise Ships in Corfu (and other tourism statistics for 2012)

It's not all doom and gloom. In fact there is optimism in this sector of the economy.

A local Corfu newspaper (I Kerkyra Simera, June 9) reports that there was a rise in the number of cruise ships and passenger arrivals in May 2012 compared to the same month in 2011.

The Corfu Port Authority (OLKE) stated that 62 cruise ships arrived in May 2012, compared to 56 in  May 2011.

Passenger arrivals were 80,699 in the month of May, 2012 compared to 69,358 in May, 2011.

Passenger numbers do not necessarily equate with customer numbers for the island's goods and services, it seems. How much does each cruise ship visitor spend on the island? According to some tourist guides, the number of people booking paid excursions and island tours is well down.

In a separate sector of the tourist economy, Corfu hotels are also reporting low room occupancy rates for the time of year.

 Kathimerini (Sunday, 10 June) reports cancellations and a double figure drop in hotel bookings in Greece (relative to 2011) for the whole tourist season. After the first inconclusive elections there was a 30%-50% drop in reservations (depending on location), the paper claims. As for rented rooms and apartments, the demand (at this point) has dropped by 70%. Since the whole issue of the paper, a week before the new elections, is full of dark foreboding and implicit warnings to the electorate, maybe we should treat these figures with a degree of caution. Some of them are based on an analysis of the period January-March 2012 against January-March 2011. Not exactly high season in Greece.

Κάθετη πτώση εμφανίζουν τα μεγέθη του ελληνικού τουρισμού τη φετινή περίοδο, ενώ οι εκτιμήσεις για το υπόλοιπο της σεζόν παραμένουν δυσοίωνες. Οι ταξιδιωτικές εισπράξεις για το τρίμηνο Ιανουαρίου - Μαρτίου παρουσιάζουν μείωση της τάξης του 15,1% σε σχέση με την αντίστοιχη περίοδο πέρυσι. Οι αφίξεις ξένων τουριστών για το ίδιο διάστημα σημειώνουν πτώση κατά 11,2%. Οι κρατήσεις στα ελληνικά ξενοδοχεία εμφανίζουν διψήφιο ποσοστό μείωσης για το σύνολο της σεζόν. Ειδικά μετά τις εκλογές, ο ρυθμός των νέων κρατήσεων μειώθηκε σε ποσοστό από 30% έως 50%, ανάλογα με την περιοχή. Η μείωση της ζήτησης για διαμονή στα ενοικιαζόμενα δωμάτια και διαμερίσματα φθάνει μέχρι στιγμής στο 70%, ενώ την ίδια ώρα οι κρατήσεις στο γιότινγκ εμφανίζουν τον Μάιο πτώση της τάξης του 30% σε σχέση με τον ίδιο μήνα πέρυσι.

Ακυρώσεις κρατήσεων από το εξωτερικό μετά το αποτέλεσμα της πρόσφατης εκλογικής αναμέτρησης καταγράφουν ακόμη και ξενοδοχεία υπερπολυτελείας στην Κρήτη από πιστούς πελάτες τους υψηλού εισοδηματικού επιπέδου. Μάλιστα, οι ξενοδόχοι φοβούνται τα χειρότερα αν δεν προκύψει σταθερή κυβέρνηση μετά και τις εκλογές.

Χαρακτηριστική είναι η περίπτωση ξενοδόχου, που δέχθηκε τηλέφωνο από συνεργάτη του, κάτοικο χώρας της Β. Αφρικής, ο οποίος προσφέρθηκε να τον φιλοξενήσει, αν χρειασθεί!
