Corfu: An Indian View of Kalami...and the Durrells

"Through a series of the serendipitous coincidences that Greece is famed for, I chance upon the Durrell School of Corfu — and arranged to meet its Director Emeritus and founder, Richard Pine, also an authority on the writings of Lawrence Durrell, having penned a book on him, and met members of the Durrell family.

We meet on the main arcade of Corfu's old town. Called the Liston, it pays homage to Corfu's French past and is crowded with merrymakers.

"The school convinced the mayor to put up that Durrell plaque," Pine tells me when we rendezvous. He points to the garden near the old fortress. "Their statues are inside..."
