PAN-IONIAN CONFERENCE, CORFU (Ι΄ Πανιόνιο Συνέδριο); Diamantina Roma; Albania, Philby, Operation VALUABLE 1949, Corfu Connection.

This time we came to Corfu to participate in an important conference (Ι΄ Πανιόνιο Συνέδριο) where we both gave papers. The printed conference programme is 112 pages long!

Maria introduced the fascinating Diamantina, Lady Bowen, Contessa di Roma to the other participants. Diamantina Roma, a famous historical figure in Australia, is still relatively unknown in the Ionian Islands. Maria talked about her life and work, and her possible influence (and that of her father) on the views, policy advice and official recommendations of her husband Sir George Bowen, regarding the status of the Seven Islands (and preferred British options for the separate fate of Corfu and Paxos) prior to the cession of the islands to Greece 150 years ago.

Jim talked about the Corfu connections to the secret British/US subversive Operation VALUABLE/BGFIEND, with a special focus on the first year of operations in 1949, and the aims, objectives and operational plans of this disastrous operation - which was betrayed by 'Kim' Philby. Jim also discussed the many other security leaks and mutual suspicions between intelligence agencies, and the attitude of the Greek government.

The Corfu Connection

The story of the first year of the secret British/US Joint Operation to support the Greek Government's attempts to deal with Communist guerillas (by taking action against Albania to prevent further attacks across the border), and with the ultimate aim of overthrowing the Communist regime of Enver Hoxha, by infiltrating anti-Communist emigré Albanian agents and fomenting anti-Communist revolution.

With new information about the objectives and operational plans - and the Corfu connection, from the declassified files in the national archives, Washington DC and Kew, London.

The paper deals with the role of  the traitor, Harold 'Kim' Philby, but also with issues of poor security surrounding the operation, and the lack of trust between allied intelligence services.

The author discusses the Corfu connection and the advance base/secret radio station at Castello Mimbelli (Bibelli), Kato Korakiana. He quotes from his discussions with Michaelis Kandaros, who worked at the British base on Corfu as a young man of seventeen.

He discusses the adventures of John Leatham and Sam Barclay, with the caique "Stormie Seas", which was used to infiltrate the first group of British-trained Albanians. Their departure from Othoni, and return to Corfu, on the first mission in October 1949.

The degree of involvement of the Greek government, General Papagos, CIC, Greek Army, and Foreign Minister Pipinelis, is also explored, and geo-political complications concerning the "Northern Epirus" issue (drawing on the declassified files).

Ο συγγραφέας ασχολείται με τη σχέση της Κέρκυρας στα γεγονότα και την ίδρυση της βάσης / μυστικού ραδιοφωνικού σταθμού στο Castello Mimbelli ( Bibelli ) , Κάτω Κορακιάνα .
