William Strachey, letter of 1610

"Truth is the daughter of Time, and men ought not to deny everything which is not subject to their own sense."

William Strachey, letter of 1610 (published 1625), on discovering the Bermudas to be "habitable, commodious and contenting" rather than as places to be feared and avoided as "the Devil's Islands", and widely believed to be uninhabitable, except by devils and wicked spirits.
