Problematic Texts: Trying To Read New Testament Greek

I have a problem with the English translations from the New Testament Greek- and with the proper interpretation and underlying meaning- of two passages. Here are the passages in question:

Luke 14:25-35 and Matthew 10:34-39

(Is there some connection or analogy here to the Buddhist concept of non-attachment?)
