Greece: Man Arrested for Selling Illegal Copies of CDs and DVDs- and Other Topics

It seems the police are more active or in evidence in Argostoli, Kefalonia than they are in Corfu Town.

See Corfu Press article.

They could make a dozen such arrests in a single day in Corfu.

Unfortunately, the people who would suffer would be the immigrants paid a pittance to tout the dodgy DVDs, not the manufacturers and distributors. There is already a human rights and abuse issue concerning police treatment of immigrants - see To Vima

It always strikes me as strange that if the Municipality (or the Government) is really short of revenue, it would be an easy matter to raise vast sums in legitimate fines for traffic and parking offences, let alone for the manufacturing of illegally copied CDs and DVDs. The fines would very soon be sufficient to pay for fuel for the refuse trucks to collect the mounting piles of rubbish.

The government could also raise the level of the property haratsi (tax) to a really significant level.

This would not be a popular vote-catching strategy, I imagine. Nor would making and enforcing the wearing of safety crash helmets on scooters and motorbikes compulsory. Such a measure might not only save thousands of  lives, it would also save millions of Euros in hospital, medical, surgical and aftercare costs.
