Seven Shillings Beach, Point Piper, Sydney

It's shocking how easy it can sometimes be to take things for granted.

For three of the seven years I lived and worked in Sydney, Australia, our home was at St. Mervyns Avenue, Point Piper.

I have just seen on the internet that the harbour-front villa, the lower half of which constituted our rented accommodation (and where most of my predecessors had also lived), was sold at auction nine years ago (in 2010) for a record Australian $17.3m.

We had a lot of fun in our sea-kayaks before they were stolen from Elizabeth Bay.

The house next door, called Altona (on the left of the photo), apparently sold for $60 million in 2016.
