Corfu and Paxos: Oil and Gas Exploration Tender Process; North West Corfu, Paxos, Antipaxos
The tendering process moves on apace. The bidding competition concerning exploration rights in the 23 Greek blocks is in its final stages, according to Ta Kerkyraika Nea today (Friday 10 October).
When will they start serious drilling on the mainland and in sensitive areas and exploration blocks in the seas off the North-West of Corfu, Paxos and Antipaxos?
What will be the consequences for the islands or for those with property onshore in the areas of these exploration areas? The impact on tourism and the environment (marine and land)? Geopolitical issues?
Background Information
Greek Reporter
"The first region starts at the northwest of Corfu, on the Albanian border and extends down to Paxos and Antipaxos, to the sea area of the Ionian opposite the Ambracian Gulf".
Balkan Analysis
"The exact locations where mass amounts of oil are believed to be located...include the region of northwestern Ileia in the Peloponnese and the area north of Corfu-Paxoi islands. This is significant for international affairs because this reaches the maritime borders with Albania, while at the same time just inland a geological formation stretches up through Epiros, and close to the Albania land border".
Pdf File Dr Konstantinos Nikolaou
GBTimes
"The contentious plots are located in four large areas that seismic studies indicate may have significant hydrocarbon reserves. One stretches from the north of Corfu, close to the Albanian border, down to the islands of Paxos and Antipaxos"
