Greece: What to do with all the redundant monasteries? Example - Monastery of Prophet Elias

After a recent visit to the local (unused) monastery in Zagori (Prophet Elias, or Elijah) I wondered what could be done with such a magnificent complex of buildings if money could be found to restore it?

No doubt others would suggest selling it as an asset suitable for redevelopment.

The Last Monk of the Monastery of Prophet Elias, Vitsa:
Father Iakovos (1870-1960)

The Monastery has been largely abandoned (apart from an annual service and occasional panigyri) since the death of Father Iakovos in February 1960. The monastery church remains an important national treasure, albeit under serious threat.
