Dorset Council, Enjoying Dorset's Countryside, Use of Public Rights of Way, Coronavirus Update 2 April 2020

Coronavirus (COVID-19) update

Use of Public Rights of Way

"Dorset Council recognises that public rights of way and the cycleway / walking trails in Dorset provide an opportunity for local people to take exercise and get some fresh air in these difficult times. These paths should not be blocked or obstructed and cannot legally be closed to the public. It is also important to stress that people should not be making special journeys to access them. Travel to exercise is NOT essential travel and people should not be travelling to do their daily exercise. Please see the latest Government guidance on access to green spaces and as always, follow the Countryside Code.

Local communities throughout the County rely on rights of way and cycleway / walking trails, however this should not be the cause of unnecessary travel into and around the County – so, if there is a particular problem with people gathering on rights of way or cycleway / walking trails, then the Police should be informed. They have the power to disperse any groups behaving in such a way.

Where rights of way pass close to, or through residential and agricultural properties, it is important that the existing Government advice regarding social distancing and hand washing is followed.

Dorset Council will work with the Police and other agencies to take any further actions necessary in the event of any changes to legislation or Government guidance, however, at this time there are no plans nor legal means to close public rights of way or the cycleway / walking trail networks for COVID-19 related reasons".

European and global solidarity.

Vers d'autres cieux à d'autres amours.

Wandering Widsith’s Original Coronavirus Homesick Blues.

(Widsið maðolade,  wordhord onleac…)

They call me Wandering Widsith, Widsith is my name,
They call me Wandering Widsith, Widsith is my name,
The way that they mistreat me, it’s a low down crying shame.

I used to be a singer, singing praises for my pay,
I used to be a singer, singing praises for my pay,
Now I’ve got the symptoms, I’ve got no place to stay.

I’ve wandered over Europe, with my harp and my word-hoard,
I’ve wandered over Europe, with my harp and my word-hoard,
But times are getting hard now, they won’t give me bed and board.

They want to lock me up and leave me, that’s the way it seems,
They want to lock me up and leave me, that’s the way it seems,
To keep me at a distance, so I can’t unlock my dreams.

An eighth century (?) blues (updated)

NB Just a song, no symptoms here.

To a Skylark, P.B.Shelley. Out of tune?

I managed to get in a short cycle-ride this morning, for my permitted daily exercise. I was rewarded when I reached the empty Maiden Castle car park by the singing of skylarks above my head, which put things into perspective.

Even that's not right, everything is out of kilter. Nothing makes sense.

"Hail to thee, blithe Spirit!
Bird thou never wert,
That from Heaven, or near it,
Pourest thy full heart
In profuse strains of unpremeditated art…

Like a Poet hidden
In the light of thought,
Singing hymns unbidden,
Till the world is wrought
To sympathy with hopes and fears it heeded not".
