Europe Sans Rivage? A 1988 Symposium Revisited
This is a French book that I have read a number of times and studied very carefully: it contains the papers given at an International Symposium held in Paris in January 1988. I reproduce below three extracts from the preface by Jean-Pierre Angremy. At the time of first publication of the proceedings (May, 1988), I did not agree with some of the points, papers and interventions made by participants at the symposium. It was held nearly two years before the fall of the Berlin Wall, when I was working in Prague. At the very least, as we approach Brexit, it is worth reminding ourselves of the idealistic aspirations expressed in the preface.
