France: Protecting and Patrolling the Beaches

One of ten military personnel (assault rifles at the ready)
observed patrolling a popular beach area in France last week.

Protecting "bare breasts" as representative symbols of freedom and the French way of life
(as the French PM Manuel Valls seems to have suggested)?

He  was criticised for making controversial comments about Marianne, as depicted in Eugène Delacroix’s painting Liberty Leading the People.

The beach life-guards were watching out for all swimmers, whether proudly and defiantly topless or modestly and conservatively covered.
