Snake-Handling and Speaking in Tongues
In Washington's National Cathedral shop one can buy T shirts, fridge magnets, computer mouse pads and other items listing ten reasons for being an Episcopalian, the first of which is "No snake handling". This somewhat humorous list apparently originated with the comedian, Robin Williams.
I heard more about snake-handling and speaking in tongues from the brother of a Baptist Pentecostal Church preacher in Virginia (see also, West Virginia, YouTube).
I heard from a doctor in Virginia that many snake-bite victims admitted to local hospitals have been bitten by snakes in church. I had been told that the snakes are milked of their venom. Not all, it would seem (CNN, YouTube). See also CNN print item.
It's a strange world.
And these signs shall follow them that believe: In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues. They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. (Mark 16:17-18)
Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. (Luke 10:19).
