Weymouth, Historic Beach Huts, Arson
It's not just North London that is in the news for acts of arson.
That old thing, the mob (made up of educated and semi-educated) - once called the Fourth Estate, significant part of the politics of 18thC London, now amplified by technologies that create and spread news. Feelings occlude analysis; suggesting a link between contagious urban pillage and the most severe cutbacks in public services since WW2 beside global recession is treated as collusion. Argument erupts in the family and among friends as we compare, share and debate our reactions to the events of the past three days. Of course "it's the economy stupid". Where the riots of 1985 and earlier were race related, this is about class, with ethnicity as a distraction. There will be now be some condign punishments, and more quietly a long enquiry into why so many people who might have expected this to happen, didn't.
